Fortuna is situated in the mountains of Murcia, presenting a traditional Spanish town atmosphere. This area, with its notable hot springs, offers visitors a chance to experience the tranquil pace of life, distinctly different from the busy tourist towns. Located in the north-east region of Murcia, Fortuna’s streets and plazas reflect a historical ambiance, providing insights into the local culture and history.

The Thermal Waters of Fortuna

This town is widely recognized for the healing waters found at the historic spa, El Balneario de Fortuna-Leana. Originally constructed in 1896, this spa has recently seen extensive renovations while retaining its original charm. The spa’s pools and baths utilize thermal waters that reach temperatures of 52C, sourced from beneath the earth. These waters have long been valued for their health benefits, particularly by the ancient Romans and Iberians, helping with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, asthma, and bronchitis. Visitors do not need to be in ill health to enjoy these calming thermal baths; many come simply to take advantage of their soothing properties or to enjoy a massage.

Historical Sites Near Fortuna

Not far from Fortuna and El Balneario Romano lies La Cueva Negra. This site is notable for its black walls and features numerous inscriptions known as tituli picti. The most significant of these date back to the 1st century AD and highlight a cult dedicated to nymphs and various deities such as Bacchus, Esculapio, and Cibeles. Archaeological efforts at this site started in the early 1980s. It is believed to have served as a worship location for Romans during the 1st century AD and for Iberians in the Bronze Age.

Outdoor Activities in Fortuna

Fortuna is also surrounded by two large national parks, teeming with wildlife and offering around 50km of hiking trails. Birdwatching enthusiasts will find this area particularly appealing, as it supports a diverse bird population. Certain regions within these parks are officially protected to ensure the preservation of specific species. While exploring the trails lined with carrasco pines and sizeable oaks, it’s possible to spot wild boar, foxes, eagles, hawks, owls, and the rare Iberian lynx.
