Local Insights: Hondon de las Nieves and Hondon de los Frailes
Hondon de las Nieves and Hondon de los Frailes are located in a stunning valley, inland and west of Alicante, Spain. These villages have retained their traditional Spanish character, remaining quaint and welcoming over the years.
Historical Background
The name Hondon de Las Nieves translates to “Gorge of the Snow,” which relates to the village’s patron, “The Virgin of the Snow.” This effigy and the church play a central role in village life, with a dedicated fiesta held in her honor.
Although detailed historical accounts are scarce, it’s believed that the area was inhabited during Greek times. The town was part of Aspe’s jurisdiction until 1839 when it became an independent municipality, joining with Hondon de los Frailes, which had separated from Redován. The two villages separated again in 1926 to form independent municipalities.
Economic and Agricultural Significance
The Hondon Valley is renowned for its grapevines, often referred to as ‘The Valley of the Vines.’ This fertile area supports a robust agricultural economy, primarily growing grapes, almonds, and olives. The landscape is surrounded by the picturesque Crevillente Sierras, and the region is recognized as part of the Vinalopó district, associated with Spanish wine production. Construction also plays a significant role in the local economy, supported by numerous limestone quarries serving the Costa Blanca building sector.
Climate and Lifestyle
The Hondon Valley enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year, with pleasant breezes contributing to a mild climate. Summers tend to be hot, while winters remain mild, offering a tranquil lifestyle in this rural setting.
